Starting a production company is a great way to combine your interests, skills and ambitions into something that’s profitable and challenging. However, starting any business is challenging, let alone one in the creative field. To succeed as the producer rather than just another jobbing creative you need to be passionate and determined. Starting a production company requires planning, preparation, and persistence — so don’t expect everything to go smoothly from the get-go. With that in mind, here are some things you should think about before setting up shop as an independent film producer:


1. What is your vision for the company?

As you start thinking about your production company’s goals and objectives, you have to decide what your vision is. Does your company have a specific focus (e.g. commercial, narrative, documentary, etc.), or do you have a desire to be more general? Most production companies start out as general-purpose firms, but this can create some limitations. As you grow, you may want to expand your company’s focus to be more specific, or keep it general-purpose. If you keep it general, you’ll have more flexibility to take on a wider range of projects and clients — but you may also have to turn down projects that are outside your core competencies. Deciding how to frame your company will affect your long-term strategy and decision-making.


2. Who is on your team?

Once you’ve decided what type of production company you want to start, the next step is building the team. If you already have a team in place, you can skip this section — but if you’re starting out solo, now is the time to find a co-founder. You’ll also need to add people to your team who can plug in where needed: - Accountant: The financial side of filmmaking is complicated, and so is your company’s finances — so you’ll need someone to manage the books. - Legal: You’ll need a lawyer to help you with contracts and intellectual property issues. - Insurance: If you are going to be hiring crew, renting equipment, or building sets, you’ll need insurance.


3. What software will you need?

As you’re building your team and planning your production company, you’ll want to think about the software you’ll need to manage projects and keep things organized. You won’t be able to use the same tools as a one-person operation. If you’re starting out as a solo filmmaker, you can use some of the same software but with a few tweaks to make it work for a single person: - Note-taking: You’ll still take notes during meetings and shoots but you’ll have to figure out a way to manage them. - Scheduling: If you’re working with a client, you’ll need to know when you need to turn things in.


4. Building your own app or using youtube?

Building your own app from scratch can be a lengthy and expensive undertaking, but there are several companies that provide app building software that you can use to create your own app easily and quickly. Alternatively, you can use YouTube as a platform to build your own audience by creating a channel and uploading videos. You can build your own brand, and gain subscribers — and once you have enough subscribers, you can start to make money. If you decide to build your own app, you have to decide on the focus of your channel — e.g. education, entertainment, news, etc. Once you have chosen the focus of your channel, you need to select a name. Branding is an essential part of any media company, so you’ll want to invest time in creating a name and logo that reflects your mission and resonates with your target audience. visit website

Becoming a successful producer and starting your own production company isn’t a quick process. It takes time, effort, and skill to build a reputation, find the right clients, and get the word out about your services. You also have to handle day-to-day operational issues, such as accounting, scheduling, and hiring new employees. You can reduce your workload by hiring an experienced accountant and bookkeeper to take care of financial matters, and a virtual assistant to keep your appointments and calendar in order. The most important thing to remember when growing your business is to stay focused on your core objectives: What do you want to achieve with your company? What services do you want to provide? How will you attract clients? How will you retain customers, and find more?
